Following on from our last blog “The Benefits of Vitamin C” I can report that Red has had an up and
down week or so. He seemed to be getting
better then had a minor setback only to push through that to start looking a
bit better. We can only hope over time
he continues to improve and makes a recovery.
Below is a photo taken on 22 October as he came to meet one of the farms
new inhabitants.
This leads me onto talking about two new members of the Em
Nau Farm family. Firstly there is “Rose”
a little heifer calf that was born on 22 October to our cow “Latte”.. For those
who follow the blog, Latte had a little calf about this time last year, “Ruby”,
who died after a few weeks from Blackleg.
We were expecting Latte to calf sometime over the week, and as such
moved her into the house paddock on Sunday so we could be assured she didn’t
have the calf up on the hill, but to have it on the Tuesday was a bit of a
surprise. Heather had fed her in the
morning as usual and went out on an all day errand at about 9AM. When we went down into the paddock at about
4PM there was Latte sitting next to a little red lump. We were so happy that it was another little
heifer (that’s three in a row from Latte) and that it was healthy – in fact it
was very lively jumping and running around.
We, hopefully, won’t make the same mistakes as we did with Ruby and this
one will live a long and healthy life at Em Nau.
The all day errand that Heather went on was up to Gympie
(about two hours north of the farm) to pick up a Wiltipoll ram to service our
three Damara/Dorper/Wiltipoll cross ewes. “Wilton”, as he has been named, was placed in
the new sheep paddock we built and then the girls were individually brought
down from their enclosure to meet the new man in their life. Wilton didn’t waste any time in trying to
introduce himself to each girl but they were unimpressed with the forwardness
of him and basically kept him running around.
We will have to wait and see if he is successful in making a more close
knit relationship with each girl.
My next blog will more than likely give an update of the expected calves as both Beaudette and Kazza are due at anytime and on the two pigs we are getting this weekend. Plus, hopefully, I will be able to say that Red has made a full recovery. So until next time LIVE YOUR DASH.
UPDATE: 23 Oct 13 - Red passed overnight. He had a number of fits late on 22 October then settled down for the night. He wasn't with us long but was well loved and will be sadly missed.
This was the last photo I took of him
