On the Eve

Well the eve of settlement has arrived and tomorrow we “officially” take over EM NAU Farm.

H and I went up to the farm last Saturday and Sunday where we started to repair the old chook pen and have been busy every afternoon over the past week up there trying to get ready for the influx of inhabitants to the pens.  The solid rain in SE Qld over the past month hasn’t really helped much as the grass in the paddocks is “as high as an elephants eye” and there is mud all through the old pens.

I do get ahead of myself some times ........ since my last blog a lot has happened.  We have brought two utes .. one was a direct trade for the beloved Corolla station wagon (a Triton) and the other a brand new Toyota cab chassis.  The Triton was the first one we brought and we took this to Gatton on Australia Day to have a look at a Nubian goat we were thinking of buying.  The ute (although a 93 model) lasted the trip  and we had no problems with it.  The next day when h got in it to drive the clutch went ... after repair H drove it home from the mechanic and put it to bed for the night – the next day (Saturday) H jumped in it to drive and the clutch went again.  When the mechanic came to fix it on the Monday he said that they couldn’t get a new clutch cable anywhere (they had tried numerous places) so we would just have to put up with the repairs – H asked how long it would take him to remove the cable (10 mins) and then went inside and rang a local Mitsubishi dealer.  Inside 3 minutes she had located a new cable – got the price and had it ordered (for the mechanic to pay for).  We haven’t had any real problems with it since it was repaired the second time (with the exception of having to have the cable tightened as it stretched a little)

On the Saturday the Triton broke for the second time H & I decided that we would get a new ute.  We went with the old faithful Toyota as we have been happy with the Corollas we have had for the past seven years.  Since receiving it from the dealer it has been running like a dream – but that’s what you expect from a new vehicle

As mentioned above we went out to Gatton on Australia day to look at goats.  We ended up buying two, the Nubian doe and a wether – will name them Cyd Charisse (stud name is Cydonia) and Wally the Gator Wether.  Cyd will be start of our goat milking herd and Wally will there to keep her company.

We have also brought a Jersey house cow (we will be calling her Beaudette) as the start of our milking herd.  Beaudette is about three years old and a black jersey.  She will be joined on the farm by Football (our jersey calf coming from Yelarbon),  a couple of calves (Australian Illawarra Shorthorns – called Cazz and Beth) coming from out Amberley way plus the four cows that are already resident at EM NAU – Lulu, Blaze, Latte and Daisy.

We have a lot of work to do the get the place ready for the chooks, goats and cows but both H & I are looking forward to the challenge.  If the rain stops we will be happy – the previous owner was at the farm when we were ther last Saturday and he was doing the “last” mow before settlement – now a week down the track the grass is as high as it was before he mowed – you can actually hear the grass growing as you stand there it is so quiet in the evenings.

Only one more sleep and it will be ours – can’t wait
