 Our Philosophy

At Em Nau farm we believe our animals should be treated humanely and ethically. We strive to provide access to fresh air, clean water, green grass and pick, plenty of sunshine - all in a healthy environment where each animal has the opportunity to free range.

This website and our blog offers to you, as our reader, transparency through open and honest communication. Our photos and stories, hopefully, will provide you an insight into the life at Em Nau farm.  .

The Name

For those of you who don't know (or remember) Pidgin English, "em nau" can be loosely translated as "this is it!", or "well done!", or "great stuff!", or "just right!" – or for the kids amongst us, "baby bear's porridge!".   Some people might even say, "Ticketyboo!".

So why Pidgin English?  During Brett's time in the Army, we spent a year in Mendi in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, and apart from needing to learn and speak Pidgin English, we came to appreciate the simple things in life, and the phrase Em Nau embodies that perfectly!  Also, the countryside at our little farm in Ocean View is so green and lush AND hilly – it reminds us quite a bit of our time in Mendi and PNG.

History

We brought Em Nau Farm in late 2011 as a lifestyle change choice.  We produce our own cheese, jams, sauces and breads from our kitchen and breed chooks, dairy goats, sheep and cattle all whilst keeping up our ‘day jobs’.  Why you ask?

We started out keeping chickens on our suburban block after Brett contracted cancer in late 2008.  We then progressed into making our own cheese, sauce and breads.  With our children finishing school and moving out we decided it was a perfect time to move out of suburbia to a more laidback lifestyle even though it was only another 30 minutes up the road.

Why the "tree change"? - many years ago Brett read a story about a person who found a headstone that read I lived the dash”.  You see most headstones do not tell you about the person, they tell you when they were born, when they died with a small dash to sum up their life.  This story had an effect on Brett and we want to get the most out of our dash that we can.  There is a poem written by Linda Ellis called "HOW DO YOU LIVE YOUR DASH" that sums up Brett's philosophy (part of it is).

For it matters not, how much we own;
The cars…the house…the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

The full poem can be found at www.lindaslyrics.com

In 2016 we decided on a strategy of improving the way we run our farm meaning Brett would go full time on running the Em Nau Farm "feedlot" which involves buying cattle as poddies and weaners, putting them on a high protein feed mix for a set period and then selling the cattle.
